School Bus Conversion

With a hands-on and practical approach, this personal project transformed a school bus into a custom home tailored to my needs. Emphasizing careful attention to construction details, every aspect was crafted with care.

  • Project Title: Baby Blue
  • Project Type: Residential / Alternative
  • Location: Canada
  • Work Completed: 2020
  • Tools: AutoCAD, Sketchup, Construction tools
  • Tasks Completed:
  • Floor plan creation and MW detailing using Sketchup. Construction of all components, encompassing woodworking, plumbing, and electrical work. Adaptation throughout the project to accommodate onsite requirements and evolving needs.

Before any physical work could commence, time was dedicated to careful planning, sketching, and envisioning the space. This preparatory phase was essential for conceptualizing the design and ensuring clarity before taking any action.

Maximizing functionality in a limited space is key in the design of a tiny space like a bus.

With space constraints limiting layout flexibility, I focused on detailing and construction planning. Utilizing SketchUp for the first time proved invaluable, enabling digital modeling and idea refinement before implementation. Dedication to the design stage initially ensured a fully realized vision before construction commenced.

To accommodate my changing needs, the sofa serves multiple purposes as a storage unit, comfortable seating area, and a queen-sized bed.

The built-in seating allows the table to slide forward and convert into an additional sofa and a magazine rack provides ample arm space and support for the table.

The kitchen cabinets also offer added space, with incorporated legroom that makes the entire counter-top a work surface when necessary.

The bus project was challenging, but the most rewarding project I’ve ever taken on.
